Spent lots of time researching this vac as it only carries a “middle” rating on Consumer Reports (mainly to do with the included canister vac=rating for onboard tools), as well as watching the infomercials everyone sees on tv. It replaced a Kenmore, top rated by Consumer Reports.

Overall happy with the Oreck XL2 (what it is now called).

What it does:

1)it actually does make the carpets look better, something to do with the type of brush and the way the individual twines are twisted on it.

2)vacuums carpets quite well, and does an excellent job on bare floors (although the store rep I talked to recommends not routinely using it on hardwood–it could scratch).

3)is easy to carry around, room to room and floor to floor (may make you more inclined to vacuum that upstairs bedroom?).

4)does not let a speck of dust/exhaust debris out, and also actually makes the room smell nice, even without adding any “scent tablets”.

5)most substantial power cord on any appliance I have used.

6)although it is not self propelled this really is not an issue as it is so lightweight I notice no excess effort to push/pull it.

7)it vacuums throw rugs without sucking up the rug

What it doesn’t do so well: 1)stay upright; since the base is so lightweight and the handle is substantial (and easy to use) the vacuum is a little top-heavy, although it does not tip over that easily.

Overall a very easy to use vacuum that does a great job making carpets look their best, cleans hardwood floors very well, and keeps the room air from being polluted. If you can get over the idea that a vacuum has to weigh 25 lbs to work, I recommend this little workhorse of a vacuum.
