The Little Green from Bissell is a blessing. We bought ours for a specific mess–a midnight stomach virus that attacked our 3 year old. She had eaten spaghetti and drank some kind of red juice, so you can imagine the intensity of the mess. Yes, it was that bad.

As I opened the box and peered at the complicated looking machine inside, I figured I would have to read the entire instruction manual to get the thing to work. Fortunately, my concerns were misplaced. Only a few pieces had to be connected and some foam wrapping removed before my Little Green was ready to clean messes. The installation is intuitive and fast. Just pop on the brush handle and the two jugs, one for soap/water, the other for discharge.

Readying the unit for use was just as easy. The system came with an 8 oz. trial bottle of soap, but thankfully we had purchased a gallon jug as well. It was needed to do the initial job. I refilled the soap/water reservoir two more times. The green/transparent soap & water jug was easy to fill and even had lines indicating how much soap and water to use. Be sure and use hot water, it cleans better.

Use

With my Little Green loaded and ready, I attacked the mess. The job requires a good deal of elbow grease since the mechanical energy of the brush motion is what actually lifts the mess off the carpet fibers. The soap and water simply make the job easier and the vacuum pulls the mess away from the rug. It’s best to attack a mess as soon after it is made, if this is possible, before the stain dries onto the carpet fibers. This is definitely a hands-and-knees tool and is not fit for a large job or full fledged carpet cleaning. You would need an upright unit with an extended arm for that. This unit is light weight and easy to move around for small-medium messes.

The manual suggested pre-treating the stained area with the soap/water mixture to help with cleaning. I did this on some areas but found it to be ineffective. Simply applying soap as I manually scrubbed and vacuumed did most of the work.

I found the vacuum pull of the Little Green to be sufficient for small jobs. This was on a medium length carpet fiber that’s pretty dense.

Cleaning

Cleaning the Little Green is just as simple as filling it. Each jug can easily be removed and filled/rinsed with tap water. This should be done soon after using the unit to keep dirt and carpet fiber from drying inside the reservoirs.

Appearance

Certainly the looks of the device are the most important feature, but it was well designed with both function and aesthetics in mind. The unit looks nice and is compact enough to store easily. It’s about the size of a large boom box and weights only about 20 lbs dry.

One improvement that could be made to the soap is an attractive aroma, or I suppose one could simply purchase a different kind of soap. The soap that came with the unit was pretty odorless except for that soapy smell. No floral scents or anything like that. After the cleaning was complete I used a fabric scent on the carpet to mask any offensive odor still present.

Also note that after cleaning the carpet this thoroughly, any stain guard that it had will probably be gone. I recommend applying a stain guard for carpets afterward to help prevent future stains. It would also be nice if the soap contained a stain guard.
