I got the Red Roomba for Christmas and have been quite happy with the purchase. I have used it on tile, hardwoods, and carpets.

It has done a very nice job on the tile and hardwood. It takes it around 1-2 hours to do my hardwood kitchen/dining room which are about 18X25. It does a really nice job picking up the crumbs around the cabinets and under the table. I find it much more effective than me sweeping the floor. Although it does seem to work better, when I actually pick up the chairs and get them out of the way before turning it on.

On the the carpet the roomba does an okay job. It doesn’t really suck things up the way a traditional vacuum cleaner does. Instead it sweeps up the surface dirt/fuz. This is probably good enough for many people. But I have kids and cats, so I need a little more deep cleaning the the roomba appears able to provide.

A couple of annoying things, I’ve discovered about the roomba are that the battery really doesn’t last much past 2 hours. I can get at the most 1 or 2 rooms done with the Roomba before I need to plug it back in to recharge. I think it takes around 7 hours to recharge fully.

The other thing that is slightly time consuming is that after every use it needs to be cleaned. Usually on the hardwood, I can get by just emptying the dirt canister, but when I use it on the carpets, I need clean the brushes too. I usually use one of the air canisters that people use to clean their computer keyboards to blow the dirt/dust out the roomba after I’ve used it to clean carpets.

Update: I tried to use my irobot to clean up lots of dirt my husband had tracked into the basement and it stopped working. No matter how much I cleaned the sensors I could not get it to work again. My husband called the company and they talked him through a checklist of resets but that did work either. So what did the company do about my broke vacuum? They sent me a brand new one! What great customer service and care. I really love this company.
