I sold upright bag vacuums for an electronics retailer for 3 years in the late 1990s and the Panasonic vacuums were easily the best line for performance and value. The vacuums I sold were between $50 and $400 and the brands included Hoover and Eureka among others. This Panasonic model was the lowest priced in the Panasonic line and the best value. I could not see any cleaning performance difference within the Panasonic line. Other Panasonic vacuums did have more attachments, longer cords and some had a “dirt” sensor to indicate there was not anymore dirt that was being picked up in a particular area. For suction power, noise level, ease of use - especially the hose - and price this model was easily the best value.

Comparing models at a retail store is quick and easy. Turning on vacuums gives you their noise level.

Suction is easy to compare by placing your hand at the end of the hoses, and doing comparison vacuuming on a sample carpet.

Ease of use - does the vacuum automatically adjust (via a pivot point) to the height of the carpet or is it a manual adjustment.

Ease of use - to use the hose is it one step (you’ll see what I mean with the Panasonics) or multi-step, i.e. 1.remove the hose from its storage hooks or clamps, 2. open the hose connection on the vacuum, 3. hold open and with other hand insert the hose into connection, 4. reverse to replace hose. (When you see a small job(s) that can only be reached with the hose in the middle of your normal vacuuming, which process would you prefer?)

Those are the basics as I remember - suction, noise and ease of use.

I bought this Panasonic model for myself, my dad, my girlfriend and my brother.
