UPDATE 7-25-02: RIP BISSELL. THE UNIT DIED? WHY? THE NICAD BATTERIES FINALLY GAVE UP DUE TO MEMORY EFFECT. YOU SEE, YOU RARELY USE THE ENTIRE BATTERY LIFE WHEN DOING A CLEANUP, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, IT’S NOT ENOUGH FOR TWO CLEANUPS. SO WHAT HAPPENS? YOU SHORT CYCLE IT. YOU CAN’T HELP BUT SHORT CYCLE IT. SO IN A YEAR, THAT GREAT BATTERY WILL NOT EVEN LAST 45 SECONDS. HENCE…REST IN PEACE.

AVOID THIS UNIT AND GET ONE WITH A CORD. OR HOPE THAT BISSEL WILL MAKE THE THING WITH NIMH RECHARGABLES INSTEAD OF NICADS. YUK!

Okay, I realize, this thing was not designed to clean the entire living room carpet. But it needs to have some more legs to it.

We bought this little “dustbuster” of a cleaner because we had a new Puppy, and felt the unit could be used to clean up little spills and the occasional spot in my Minivan.

The Cordless feature turned me on to this unit especially for the car.

The unit itself is attractively styled and is relatively easy to use. When operating the powerful vacuum is extremely effective at removing pet stains from the carpet and the unit is relatively frugal on fluid use, which is good, as the rug cleaner solution can get rather expensive.

However, its strongest selling point is also it’s weakest. Being Cordless, the unit has only about 5 to 10 minutes of cleaning per charge. The Batteries are NiCAD and are prone to memory effect if you don’t fully discharge them. As a result, you are almost required to fully drain the charge each time you use it, so that you don’t build up a memory.

Now this wouldn’t be such a bad thing if you could plug it in and “use” it while charging. Unfortunately, this is not the case. As a result, it is useless for using in a minivan or car, because there is NO WAY to fully clean your car carpets in the charge that is provided.

What Bissell should have done is made the unit have the ability to be corded OR cordless. Thus for small pickups, I can just move it anywhere and clean up. But for slightly larger jobs, I could just plug it in and continue.

The size of the unit would be perfect for use in a Car, SUV or MiniVan, but it’s short cleaning time makes it useless in this capacity.

If you need the unit to quickly pick up small spills or animal messes, this thing is a God Send, but if you have a job that will take you over 5 minutes. Look elsewhere.

I recently used this dynamo to help suck water off the bathroom floor when I had a toilet overflow emergency. It was EXTREMELY effective in this capacity (for as long as the battery lasted) and has helped elevate my rating of this by one star. However, it should only still be purchased for small, quick, cleanups. If you need something for the car, pick up one with a cord or that will run off the 12 volt outlet in the car.
