I have three dogs and two cats. I also have carpeting, the natural enemy of housepets. So when we bought the first, older version of the Little Green Machine, I thought I had found a good solution to the pets versus carpet problem, since I only have two small rooms of carpeting (the rest is wood flooring) and could not justify buying a heavy-duty standalone carpet machine.

It was a nice thing while it lasted. But the first one did not last too long. And I was soon reduced to scrubbing out “accidents” by hand, a task I would rather not be doing.

A year after the first machine went to the Great Recycling Bin in the Sky, we saw the newly redesigned version in Sears, and, thinking it had to be better this time around, and that the availability of “Pro-Heat” would make the cleaning that much easier, we plunked down the hundred bucks for that version of the machine.

It worked well at first, although I quickly found the brush attachment to be a joke, since it requires you switch from suction to brush to use it. While using it, you can’t vacuum up the liquid, so all it can do is scour the carpet. Why you would want to scour wet carpet without actually cleaning it at the same time is a point I do not understand. So while I liked using the brush attachment because of the larger size, it never worked as promised.

I found the recommended pet stain removing carpet shampoo easy to find in the stores, but not particularly effective enough to justify the expense of regular use. After a few bottles, I found myself just using tap water and spraying commercial pet stain cleaners on the carpet manually. This turned out to be a good thing, because the “Pro-Heat” feature got the sprayed cleaner barely warmer than the warm water used in the canister. Effectively, it was a waste of money. And the sprayer became non-functional or barely functional shortly after the purchase - it needed a lot of coaxing to be primed and working every time I refilled the canister.

Cleaning the waste water canister was another issue. Pet hair got in, dirt got in, but emptying the canister of both was not easy, and I found myself having to remove the gaskets on the bottom and rinsing the canister out in the yard with a hose to be the only way to prevent the stinky, smelly mess from remaining inside. Not a job anyone wants to do, given what was in there.

Finally, with only moderate to light use, the machine died. First the switch for the preheater stopped working, and then the switch for the entire machine. It wasn’t abused, it wasn’t used much at all, it just reflects the overall poor quality of the machine. For a hundred bucks, I would have expected a lot better. For that kind of money, I could have bought a small wet-dry canister vacumn, a couple of gallon bottles of Nature’s Miracle, and done a better job of cleaning to boot. Which is what I intend to do now.
