I live in an apartment with low, tight pile carpeting. I have two small dogs who sometimes have accidents in the house. I wanted something quick and easy to clean up the occasional messes they make. I heard about the Sharper Image steamer from a friend and immediately ordered it online for $129.

Well, the first week, one of the dogs was sick and had a very messy accident on the carpeting. Time to test out the new cleaner! The wet vac part worked pretty well to pick up the initial mess, however, when going to clean up what already "sunk in" to the carpet, the steamer made it WORSE! I followed the directions to the letter, but to no avail.

To make matters worse, the vacuum has vents on either side for outgoing air. When sucking up the dirty water from the mess, the vents "leak", that is, blow out the messy water in fine streaks along along the outside of the vacuum and all over one’s hands. The dirty reservoir was was not full by any means so this shouldn’t have happened. I ended up with a larger (albeit lighter) brown stain, dirty hands, and a horrible hot steam doggie-doo smell permeating the room. Gross! I grabbed my bottle of pet cleaner, scrubbed the stain out by hand, and then used the vacuum part of the steamer to suck up the dampness. I tried the vacuum a few more times on various other spills and stains, and found I ALWAYS had to supplement the steamer with scrubbing with a spray cleaner by hand.

This steamer might work well on a different type of carpeting, but for apartments, FORGET IT!
