My in-laws offered to buy my wife and I an Oreck XL Ultra 40th Anniversary vacuum for our 5th wedding anniversary. We were thrilled! We ordered the vacuum directly from Oreck, paid about $500 dollars for it, and received a chunky black handheld vacuum as our “free gift” from the manufacturer. (It died within three months.)

I put the vacuum together, and tried it out. It seemed to do a good enough job, and was handy for vacuuming under furniture because it can lay very flat. But after just a few months, my wife began having doubts about the vacuum. It didn’t seem very powerful — she had to vacuum dirty areas in the carpet multiple times to remove the dirt. Plus, the connection between the handle and the power cord kept working its way loose as we vacuumed, a real annoyance because the vacuum stops working until you push the cord back in.

The vacuum gave us 5 years of very average performance. I had to take it apart to clean it out monthly because our dog’s hair would get stuck in the many nooks and crannies in the underside of the vacuum, and it would smell bad. In fact, every time we vacuumed, the vacuum would cause the whole house to smell like wet dog. One day, my wife called me at work, very upset, because the handle on our Oreck vacuum had started to smoke, and it became very hot. Once again, the poorly designed power cord had come loose from the handle, but just enough that it caused an arc that made the plastic handle start to smolder. Thank God my wife was not hurt.

I called Oreck’s customer service number to complain and to try and get some resolution to the problem. The customer service rep that I spoke to would take no responsibility for the problem, and offered us nothing in return. I went up the chain of command, but the best I could get from Oreck was the promise of a “refurbished” XL Ultra. After about 30 minutes on the phone, I didn’t want to waste any more of my time. So, I tossed the Oreck into the trash. After doing some research, we bought a Kenmore 25512 Progressive Canister vacuum, and have been very happy with it.

Bottom line is: don’t waste your money or risk your safety on this Oreck.
