I purchased my Oreck XL about 2 years ago. I did because my best friend talked on about how she loved hers,(which she had gotten as a “hand me down”). At first it seemed to do a good job. It seemed to do a good job on cat hair (I have 4 house cats)and the filter bag seemed to retain all the dust. After just about 6 months I started to notice how my carpet was loosing it’s fluff. The Oreck was not pulling the pile up and the carpet was starting to just go flat. I tried my old “Hoover” (which I bought at Sears for under $100.00 12 years ago)a few times after vacuuming with the Oreck and couldn’t believe how much fluffier the Hoover made my carpet. The Oreck bags are expensive and you must change them every month to help keep the suction power up, even if they are only about 6 inches full. The bag does not snap tightly on and the exterior bag is full of dust everytime I unzip it. It is a terrible mess and needs to be vacuumed out before I can put in a new bag. It also has a bad smell. I have used the scent tablets and all they did was mask the bad odor the machine puts off. I have to spray freshener when I am done vacuuming. This is just ridiculous! We also received the small black attachment vacuum with our XL and that too is garbage. It is so loud that you can hardly stand to have it hanging on your shoulder while you use it. It also seemed to be pretty good at first, but over a short time lost all of it’s power. If you use the brush, you can’t get anything to pick up and without the brush, you can’t get the dust. It is in my garage next to the trash. One day I will move it over 2 feet into the garbage can…. The only good thing I can say about the Oreck is it is very light (which I think is why it doesn’t pull the pile up) and it does seem to do a fairly good job on bare floors. Unfortunately I only have 2 bare floors in my home…
