It’s only 8 lbs, but it beats the heavyweights! - Oreck XL Deluxe U3700 Bagged Upright Vacuum I love this vacuum. I live in an apartment with wall-to-wall carpet except the bathrooms and kitchen. I also hav...
I had a Kirby upright which was a monster to carry around at 40 pounds. It really hurt my back. I’ve also had Eureka, Dirt Devil, and Hoover. They all broke after two years of use. In 15 years of marriage, I’ve spent a fortune on vacuums. Then, I bought the Oreck. The Oreck I have now is actually my second one, my first Oreck was taken away by the Kirby salesman when I bought the Kirby. I was so glad to get an Oreck vacuum again. This is lightweight and does everything the commercials say it does. I like the bags, they are large and don’t need to be replaced often. I can go for about 6 mos. using one bag.
The only things I don’t like about the Oreck are: (1) The cotter pins (or whatever they are) that are attached on the underside next to the brush–they fall off. When this happens I notice the brush doesn’t pick up debris from the carpet very well. I have a long-haired cat, so picking up the hair from my berber carpet is essential. When the brush doesn’t pick up, I have to repeatedly vacuum over the area. (2) The belt stretches not long after replacement (about two months). When the belt stretches, this also causes a decrease in the vacuum’s effectiveness. The stretched-out belt creates a burnt odor which is annoying, but that is a sure sign it’s time to buy a new belt. (3) The power cord is too short (at least for me) another three feet or so would be an improvement.
This upright is not good for stairs. I do use it for that instead of the canister, but the vacuum is bit too wide for narrow stairs.
The canister vac that came with the upright is ok–not great. I have used it to vacuum my car’s carpet, but found that it didn’t pick up as well as I would have liked, so I take my car to the car wash for the high powered vacuum.
The canister is fine for stairs and cleaning lamp shades and drapery. My only complaints are that the canister’s hose and power cord are too short. If they were about three feet longer, it would be perfect. I don’t use the canister vac too often, as I find the shoulder strap slips off my shoulder during use which is very annoying. I spend more time fiddling with the strap than I do vacuuming.
The upright vacuum needs to be maintained by your local vacuum cleaner shop so it gives you optimum performance.
Even with all this, I would buy another Oreck any day. It beats Kirby and all the others by a mile.
