I have owned my Dyson Animal for just over two years. I can not believe the amount of cat hair it pulls out of our carpet (we own two cats). It is a fairly quiet and light machine compared to our old upright Sears vacuum.
The vacuum was purchased from Overstock.com and it was a refurbished model. I paid the extra $25 for a two year extended warranty. After a year and a half the hose that runs from the bottom of the machine to the canister developed a hole. I am not sure if it cracked due to use or if we had run over something that was sharp. Needless to say I called Overstock and they refused to repair it under the warranty. All of a sudden they started quoting the fine print which supposedly stated hoses are not covered (this was never mentioned when I bought the warranty nor did I ever receive a hard copy). Not wanting to go without a vacuum for a week my husband “fixed” the hose with electrical tape. It worked fine so I never brought it in for service.
After the warranty expired the vacuum started to make ratcheting sounds. We looked at it and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. Since the Overstock.com warranty was expired I figured I would call Dyson directly. Talk about wonderful customer service! The representative we spoke with took my husband through all the troubling shooting steps. It was determined we would have to bring in the vacuum for service. I had also told the representative about my experience with Overstock. She was surprised that they didn’t recommend I call Dyson directly. The representative sent a replacement hose to me free of charge! This was because of the issues I had with Overstock. I couldn’t believe it! I had issues with a completely different company but Dyson wanted me to be a satisfied customer so they sent the free part. The representative also told me how to replace it, she asked me to call back if I had any issues (it turned out to be very easy to replace).
I took the vacuum into a certified Dyson dealer for repair. We had been expecting the worst since we thought the clutch needed to be replaced. It turned out that the beater bar had hair inside of it. This in turn caused the clutch to seize up so no damage would be caused to the machine from the beater bar not turning correctly. We would not have been able to repair it ourselves since a special tool is required. The total cost was $10.00 for the repair! I kept thinking that the repair shop could have charged me for a new clutch (Approximately a $90-$120 repair) but they were honest and only repaired what was needed.
Overall I am very satisfied with my Dyson, I would definitely purchase one again. Even though the body of the machine is plastic and I had the two minor issues with the hose and beater bar, the overall performance and customer service of Dyson have made me a loyal customer.
