After reading multiple reviews on carpet cleaning machines I knew little more than before. I decided to run my own test. I purchased the Bissell Proheat Clearview 1699/8900 series for $195 from Wal-Mart and the Hoover SteamVac Gold F5887-990 for $229 (it had a hand-held powerbrush) I know that this is not good to do - buying with intent to return something or one of them but before you brand me read up!
The bissell I discovered was returned by someone else due to the water in the tank and the vapor on the plastic tanks but the interesting thing was setup. The Bissell was much more cumbersone with multiple tanks and seals to deal with. I had some water leakage like the other raters. Oh, and the dial for Smartmix is supposed to give you the auto feature of Proper soap delivery - forget it. I was still unsure and it loves to run out quickly. The powerbar brush thing’s bristles are very stiff compared to the Hoover’s round brushes and are exactly like a standard vaccuum beater bar design. It is also belt-driven. The single tank for clean water and dirty water is neat. The heavy duty bag keeps them separate - while clean goes out dirty comes in. One thing here though that I noticed. The lint screen on the Bissell is a tiny rectangular insert. This is easily clogged and WILL effect the suction power. One thing I noticed too. The water tanks on both empty quickly so I am not sure of how critical a heater is. Comparing more closely, the Hoover extraction (dirt) tank is large and you can see the flow easily vs. the tiny round flow indicator on the Bissell- it also has another filter to clean. The lint screen filter on Hoover is the size of a small auto oil filter wrapped around the cylindrical intake. Both do tile floors similarly. The Bissell is higher pitched and sounds more powerful but the brushes only rotate one direction. Both require the use of the trigger to soap. I do not see how the smartmix helps It brought more variables into the delivery of solution. Tools are all on board for both. I cannot comment on the Bissell turbo brush since it was not one my test model. The Hoover brush is great. I tried it on a chair and the brushes rotate about 300 rpm or so (5X per sec) on high setting. Water that comes out of the wand is cool (I understand that is true of both) and as far as fit and finish, the Bissell looks good. IT is made of shiny plastic which shows scuffs. Some parts are easily bendable. The Hoover is finshed sturdy with a rough dull finish that will probably look newer longer. I returned the Bissell like the person before me.
