You won’t believe it until you’ll see it - Hoover U5288-900 Upright Vacuum Although I was aware of Hoover's reputation, I decided to buy a Dirt Devil upright (MVP) three years ago. In July ...
I purchased the Hoover Bagless Upright Vacuum, U5288-900 just a few short months ago, when we moved into a carpeted home. I was impressed with the cannister system, eliminating the necessity to purchase bags, and I thought the hepa filter was just the thing for my husbands allergies. But most of all, I chose this vacuum because I trusted Hoover.
The first one of these I had lasted just a few months. Once I heard it making a weird whrrrrr sound, turned it off immediately, and investigated. I assumed there was just string or something wrapped around the little brush thingy, but that wasn’t it. I took off the bottom panel, and discovered the belt was hopelessly twisted. How this happened, I can’t imagine. I can only assume the belt was too loose to begin with. So I fixed it, and shrugged it off. Hey, stuff happens, right?
About 3 weeks later I turned on the vacuum only to have it start smoking. Immediately I unplugged it, and when it cooled off, I again investigated. Again the belt was twisted beyond recognition, but this time it had burned the motor out.
Livid, I hit the internet and sent off a letter to Hoover demanding a replacement. It’s been over a month now, no answer. Thank God for Walmart, I exchanged it, but I am deeply bothered by Hoover’s lack of customer service. Still, I assumed I had gotten a rare lemon.
My new version’s belt has stayed in place thus far, but the top section of this machine periodically just pops off the base while I’m using it. It just doesn’t fit exactly right.
Now, when this vacuum works, it really works. It’s lightweight, self propelled, the cannister system works well as long as you remember to keep it level when you pull it out. The vacuum comes with lots of handy attachments for cleaning under and around furniture, which I really appreciate.
Still, I spent nearly $200 on a vacuum, which is A LOT of money for our family, and I’ve gotten two machines with problems. I relied on the Hoover name, and I have been let down.
However well it works, when it does work, I just can’t recommend this machine.
