Nobody does it like you…. HOOVER! - Hoover U5288-900 Upright Vacuum My family and I just purchased this vacuum (Hoover U5294-900 Bagless Upright) on a Saturday. It is now Monday and...
Over a year ago while at Costco, I allowed a slick salesperson to convince me that the “Eureka Worldvac” vacuum cleaner was the greatest thing since white bread. I have regretted that day since… that is, until I bought this spiffy new Hoover Bagless Upright. (How’s that for a 50’s pitch?).
I own two large indoor dogs who go outside a good deal in good weather. As a result, I need to vacuum the Berber carpet 2-3 times per week, minimum. It probably needs it more, but I’m a single guy, and you know how we are. The Eureka World Vac seemed to work decently, but it at times makes noises that sound like they came from the pits of Hell, and I’d still have dirty socks if I walked around on the carpet for lengths of time. Well, I recently vacuumed with the Eureka for the last time, and two days later, brought home the Hoover bagless.
Once I had the vacuum put together (a very simple matter of screwing in a total of 4 screws, with very easy directions), I did a quick test run over my larger living room carpet, and down the hallway. This task was easy, even though the vacuum has some weight to it, as it’s power actually pulls you along, almost as easily as a self-propelled cleaner, though this one is not self-propelled. I took a little bit of time, but did not do what I’d call a “thorough” job, as again, this was a test. There is only one word I can describe after using it - disgusted. No, not at the Hoover… at my carpet!!
The vacuum has two “chambers”. One houses the main filter, and the other collects the dust and dirt. After this short test, the dirt chamber was three-quarters of the way full of dog hair, and dirt! Not dust mind you, but actual dirt! YUCK! The filters worked great too, as I didn’t smell any “vacuum smell” while I was doing this, and didn’t look down at the chamber until I was done to see what it had captured. Two thoughts immediately went through my mind: “I can’t believe my carpet is this dirty”, and, “Damn Eureka to Hades”.
Emptying the container is fairly easy, but can be more than a one step process. You unlatch it, and pull the chamber out from the vacuum. It has a “lid” that covers the canister top, which is nicer than some other bagless models that leave the top of their canisters open, so dust vapors can leak out while you’re walking to the trash. Now, here’s the extra step(s): You’ll want to empty this outside in the trash container, as opposed to let’s say, in the kitchen. I’m not kidding when I say this vacuum gets dirt out of your carpet. Throwing it into a small trash can will result in a dirt/dust cloud that spills out into your home. Empty it outside. Here’s a hint too: Get a can of compressed air (like you clean computer keyboards with), and give the filter and the container a few squirts of high powered air. It cleans extra gunk out of them.
The container popped right back in with little maneuvering, and I went over the carpet again. This time it filled up the chamber nearly halfway… again!! Argh! Anyway, you get the hint; after about four go-overs with this thing, the dirt that my Eureka had left in the carpet had finally been extracted. Something to think about - my Eureka used small bags, and yet I could vacuum the whole house six times before it filled up. With the Hoover Bagless, it nearly filled up completely on one pass. I think that clearly shows how much better the Hoover picks up dirt.
Forget the “Fantom” (my sister owns one, and says it’s cheap and has broken twice on her). You can even forget the $279 model that Hoover has of a bagless too. This model is only $179 in most stores (got mine at a Walmart super center), and is the best deal, and offers the best cleaning, at the best price. I’ll end this with my summary of the best and worst of this Hoover:
The Best Things
Excellent suction & cleaning power on floor mode.
Sturdy construction / easy to put together.
Hepa filter works… no smells while vacuuming!
Reasonably easy to empty and clean out.
Very easy to push - almost self propelled!
Reasonably quiet motor and wheels.
Hepa filter has a 3 yr. lifespan - longer than other vacs.
The Not So Great
Attachment suction (ext. hose, duster brush, etc.) is not very powerful compared to other vacuums I’ve used.
Electric cord could maybe be about 6 feet longer?
Cleaning it can be a multi-step process.
Overall Grade = B+
