I really don”t consider myself an authority on vacuum cleaners. However, I am a bachelor, so I do consider myself somewhat an expert on dust and dirt.
I recently moved from an apartment with hardwood floors to a three-level townhouse - all carpet. Needless to say, one of my first purchases had to be a vacuum cleaner. After researching various models of vacuums on the web, I decided on the Bissell Lift-Off Upright and Detachable Canister Vacuum. I wasn’t disappointed.
The cleaner sports a 12 amp motor, which means you don”t have to pick up lint and drop it back down on the floor in order for it to be picked up. The vacuum sucks it up the first time around. It also comes with five attachments so you can easily clean the spider webs that accumulate in the corners of the ceiling. I have yet to price replacement bags, but Bissell recommends "style 4 bags made with Filtrete technology from 3M".
Perhaps the coolest feature of the cleaner is the detachable canister. With the press of a latch, the canister is easily removed so that you can clean staircases and other places the upright cant reach. When finished, the canister easily snaps back into place.
The only problems I have had with the cleaner is that the "soft-grip handle" tore after one month of use. Also, the headlamp burned out after two months of use. Neither of these issues are critical and, as long as the vacuum dependably cleans the floors, I’m a happy camper.
In summary, I recommend the Bissell Upright Detachable Canister Vacuum. Having both an upright and canister in one model gives you the best of both worlds. Because it "sucks", I give it five stars. Because the handle and light broke after 2 months of use, I deduct one star for a net of four stars.
