After carefully researching on the net for a robotic-vacuum, I decided on the Roomba Red.

The Red comes with a seven hour battery charger and one “Virtual Wall” (used to confine the unit to a specific area). The other units in the Discovery Roomba line offer additional peripherals such as a three hour charger, additional “Virtual Walls” a remote control, wall mounted storage/charging unit and/or a self-charging home base.

The Red packs the same cleaning power as the higher priced iRobot models, so if you can live without the gizmos and gadgets of the Discovery line-up, the Red is the one for you.

Simply place the unit in the centre of a room, power the unit on and press the “Clean” button and away it goes. The unit moves at the pace of a slow walk and gently bumps its way around an area. Its programming directs the unit through a cycle of “edge” cleaning and “field” cleaning. When the unit detects an area with heavy dirt, the Red slows downs and circles the area until it is clean.

I have a young family and several pets. Our home is a three-story with laminate flooring and carpet. The Red has done a great job on all surfaces. We have a routine where we clean two floors a day. We are able to clean roughly 1,000 square feet (mostly laminate flooring) per charge. The Red runs for roughly two hours per charge although, in general I have seen longer cleaning times with laminate floor areas compared to carpeted.

It’s low profile allows the Red to get into places that were missed during our previous conventional vacuuming. We have had to spend a few minutes clearing a room before letting the Red go to ensure it does not get caught in wires and plugs.

When the unit is done cleaning, particularly in my home, with the amount of pet hair we have, the collection canister is always full. It takes about five minutes to clean the brushes and empty the bins - depending on the amount of fur caught in the brushes.

My only negative comment is the seven hour charger that comes standard with the Red where all other models come with a three hour charger. I have purchased the self-charging home base to speed up the turn around time of the unit. As well, I will be keeping the charger and Red in the lower level so that I can clean the basement at the end of the day and wake up with the Red fully-charged and ready for another day.

Having a robot to do the cleaning is still quite a novelty in our home. We will hopefully start to save time and become more productive as we all seem to stand around and watch the Red do its thing! A great investment - worth every penny.
